Which anti-virus does the least good?

Gotta give Mike over at Techdirt credit for picking this one up. It seems anti-virus software is susceptible to scanning flubs (like skipping malicious files altogether), due mainly to the need to scan so many files so quickly.

But one anti-virus software provider has either not been tested for the exploit, or is NOT susceptible to it.

12 minute trip to hell

We have heard this a few times before, based on various security firm tests. But just so people don’t get complacent about internet security (or think that the firms doing the tests are just there for pushing products), here it is again…

It can take as little as 12 minutes for an unprotected PC connected to the internet to catch some sort of nasty bug. That is less time than it takes to get anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall installed on a fresh PC.

Microsoft enters virus defense fray

Microsoft recently announced they will be offering subscription computer maintenance to its Windows users, which includes virus scanning. Not unexpected - subscription service for anti-virus and other computer issues has become par for the course. And with many of the vulnerabilities clearly being a Microsoft problem to begin with, Redmond is likely looking at this as an additional public relations step prior to the release of Longhorn.
