This just came in: Mills College Weekly – Spam Floods Mills Inboxes.
This is the second time in a week an educational institution has been mentioned in the same sentence with the word “spam” so I thought I would ask the question again…
ARE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS SELLING EMAIL ADDRESSES TO MARKETERS?
Are they allowed to do this? If they are doing it and are allowed to, do they not have a clue what a problem they are causing for themselves?
If this is in fact the case, who is responsible? I know if I was a taxpayer in the State of Texas, and UT was selling email addresses for profit, only to have to spend ten times that amount fighting spam (in both tech and legal dollars), I would be one pissed off cookie.
In addition, students, faculty, and staff should have a say in this – if they don’t it is a crying shame. Like I said before, they should find an alternative provider, and can the one given to them by their educators.
More to come (I just bet).
