What does this mean for future software development?

I am curious as to what impact IBM’s decision to donate Rational IP to the open source community will have on folks like Microsoft, the Open Source Technology Group, and whomever else.

Anyone care to lend an opinion?

just a few thoughts:

1. for some of the most complex applications, the best way to do software development is open source

2. if you’re driving for market share, you can beat the price of free.

3. AFAIK, IBM is only donating a portion of the RUP platform to the open source community. in some sense, you might even say this is like – giving the basic tool away for free, but charging for the enterprise edition.
