The SSL “lock” doesn’t mean you’re safe

Netcraft is reporting that phishing attempts spoofing SSL encryption in the browser are on the rise.

The attacks are using more sophisticated means, including certificates with bank-like names on them. As Netcraft notes, most people will ignore browser messages that say the certificates don’t match. I agree.

New Opera Anti-Phishing feature

Paying for a browser seems a little strange, and validating site certificates certainly doesn’t. But if Opera’s new certificate checker can make a user aware of a fake site even once, it will have been 40 bucks well spent. The voice recognition is just icing on the cake.
